Do you think that we have said everything about kilograms and pounds yet? Nothing more wrong! In this article we want to focus on practical side of how many lbs per kg. We will show you not only how many lbs in one kg but also how to calculate any number of kilograms, for instance, to know how many lbs is 70 kg.
Before we move on to explain you how many kgs per lb and how to calculate these two units, we want to tell you a little about them.
Both kilogram and pound are units of mass. What is the difference?
The kilogram is a basic unit in the metric system, also known as International System of Units (in abbreviated form SI). This unit is used mostly in countries of the continental Europe.
The kilogram is defined as following: “The kilogram, symbol kg, is the SI unit of mass. It is defined by taking the fixed numerical value of the Planck constant h to be 6.62607015×10−34 when expressed in the unit J⋅s, which is equal to kg⋅m2⋅s−1, where the metre and the second are defined in terms of c and ΔνCs.”
The kilogram can be also written as kg in abbreviated form.
This unit is used in science, engineering and also in everyday life. For instance, in kilograms is measured body weight or product weight.
In turn, the pound is a basic unit in Imperial and United States customary systems of measurements. Of course, it is sometimes used in other systems too.
As you may have guessed, the pound is used mostly in the United States and the United Kingdom.
There are more than one kind of pound but the most common is avoirdupois pound. In this article we want to focus only on this kind of pound.
The avoirdupois pound do not have its legal definition but it is commonly defined as unit of mass which can be divided into 16 ounces.
The avoirdupois ounce can be written as lb (lbs in the plural) or “.
This unit is used, as a kilogram, in everyday life. For example, in pounds is given body weight or product weight.
This was some basic information about kilogram and pound. Now we can move on to the main topic of this article, it means how many lbs equal a kg. Let’s start.
To calculate how many pounds to kg you need a formula. Before we give you a ready-made formula, you should know how many lbs make a kg and vice versa. Have a look:
We will also show you these results in a chart down below. We hope that this method of showing you the results is so much clearer. Let’s see:
Kilograms (kg) | Pounds (lbs) |
1 | 2.20462262 |
0.45359237 | 1 |
Now we can show you a formula which is needed to make kg to lb calculation. Have a look:
Amount of kilograms * 2.20462262 = the result in pounds
This is a full version of a formula. We have also a shorter form of a formula for those of you who want to make your calculations easier. You can find it down below:
Amount of kilograms * 2.2 = the result in pounds
The only thing you need to remember is your result will be not so accurate if you use this version of a formula. Of course, in some cases it can be sufficient.
Now we will show you step by step calculation using both formulas. Thanks to this you can learn how to use them and also compare the results.
Let’s start with a full version of a formula. How many lbs is 500 kg? You have to multiply the number of kilograms by 2.20462262. In this case, multiply 500 by 2.20462262. It gives 1102.31131. After rounding off the result to two decimal places it is equal 1102.31 pounds.
Now we can try a shorter version of a formula. How many lbs is 500 kg? In this case multiply 500 by 2.2. It gives 1100. So 500 kg is equal 1100 pounds.
As you can see, the difference is quite significant. You can also compare these two results in a charts down below.
In the first chart is the result calculated with a full formula. Have a look:
Kilograms (kg) | Pounds (lbs) |
500 | 1102.31131 |
In the second chart is the result calculated using a short formula. Let’s see:
Kilograms (kg) | Pounds (lbs) |
500 | 1100 |
After this step by step calculation in two different versions we can move to the next examples in a shorter form. Are you interested? Keep reading.
In this part we want to focus on smaller numbers of kilograms, it means numbers under 50 kilograms. The examples will be shown in two different versions. Firstly, we will show you calculations using a full formula and then using a short formula.
Let’s start with a full version of a formula:
Now have a look at calculations using a short formula:
As you can see, the smaller number of kilograms, the less significant difference between results calculated with a full formula and with a short formula.
We also gathered all these results in two tables to make your comparison easier.
In the first table you can find the results calculated with a full version of a formula. Have a look:
Kilograms (kg) | Pounds (lbs) – rounded off to two decimal places |
45 | 99.21 |
40 | 88.18 |
30 | 66.14 |
9 | 19.84 |
8 | 17.64 |
6 | 13.23 |
4 | 8.82 |
In the second table are the results calculated using a short version of a formula. Let’s see:
Kilograms (kg) | Pounds (lbs) |
45 | 99 |
40 | 88 |
30 | 66 |
9 | 19.8 |
8 | 17.6 |
6 | 13.2 |
4 | 8.8 |
Calculations for smaller numbers are behind us, now we can move on to bigger numbers of kilograms. In this part we want to focus on number of kilograms between 100 and 80.
As in the previous part, firstly we will show you calculations using a full formula, then we will move on to calculations using a short one.
Let’s start with a full formula. Have a look:
Let’s see how look these examples calculated using a short formula:
In this part you can find the examples for numbers of kilograms between 80 and 50.
Firstly, calculations using a full formula:
Now you can see calculations using a short formula:
